The Full Changelog can be Seen Here

Minetest, the Minecraft-like voxel game engine (and an uncomplicated game that comes with it) comes with a new version that comes with Minetest 5.4.0 and is worth trying again.

As we’ve stated during the release Candidate stage of the release, this version makes it much easier to momod small mod packs, as well as complete games. Minetest offered a way to browse and download them all directly within the game for some time, but now it will also download all the dependencies mods need – making it much easier to get the mod you want and then put it into a game. It’s no longer necessary to download one mod and then look for the parts it requires.

A few improvements were also made to the built-in game “Minetest Game”. Although it’s not much in itself, it does serve as an excellent platform to showcase the engine and for extending by adding modifications. Minetest 5.4.0 now comes with crafting guides, five more wood variations, environmental sounds for active furnaces and lava, and a variety of bugs fixed and translations. It continues to build on the slow and steady build-up to something that is a bit more out of the box.

Other new features include the cross-hair changing as you point at objects, the ability to bind mouse buttons, name tags for players now have a semi-transparent background there’s a caverns feature for the flat map generation as well as the “place” and “fig” keys are now configurable, lots of modding enhancements and plenty of bugs fixes, such as blocking players from access inventory of other players.

It’s amazing to see this free and open source game engine and game working so well. According to the official server list, Minetest is used by many people with hundreds online at the time this article goes live.
